Temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) Special Issue

The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) connect the jaw to the skull and are the most used joints of the human body. TMJ disorders (TMD) are severely debilitating and a significant public health issue. Therapies for TMD have mixed success so there is a great need for new research into the TMJ to prompt therapies that are more effective. The eCM journal is facilitating this by producing a special issue focused on the TMJ, which serves as a platform for the publication of manuscripts describing novel basic science on TMJ development, growth, homeostasis, pathologies and therapies.

Keywords: Temporo-mandibular joint, temporo-mandibular disorders, synovial membrane, synovial fluid, fibrocartilage.

Submission deadline: 31st of March 2023

Prof. Brian Johnstone
Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, OR, USA

Brian Johnstone, PhD, FIOR, FORS, is one of the Scientific Editors of the ECM journal, joining the board in 2004. He did his predoctoral research in England and postdoctoral studies in the USA where he is now the Research Director for the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation at Oregon Health & Science University. His main research area is skeletal tissue regeneration, and has worked on cartilage, spine, meniscus and temporomandibular disc. He developed and patented the system for the chondrogenic induction of stem cells. He has produced peer-reviewed manuscripts, chapters and reviews (13,204 citations, h-index of 48, i10-index of 72), with grants from numerous sources including NIH, Arthritis Foundation and Shriners Hospitals. Brian is a Past-President of the Orthopaedic Research Society and has served/serves on numerous grant review panels of national and international organizations and journal editorial boards. He currently advises the AO Research Institute, the Translational Medicine Institute at CSU, the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation and is the Mercator Fellow for a German multi-center program. Brian has received numerous national and international honors including being elected into the inaugural class of Fellows of International Orthopaedic Research (FIOR), and that of the Orthopaedic Research Society Fellows (FORS). He is now Chair of the College of FIORS. In 2017 he was awarded the Marshall R. Urist Award for his contributions to tissue regeneration research.

Associate Prof. David A. Reed
Department of Oral Biology, College of Dentistry, University of Illinois Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA

David A. Reed is an Associate Professor of Oral Biology at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry. He has a PhD in Integrative Biology from the University of Chicago, and he completed post-doctoral training at the University of Illinois Chicago with research interests in biomineralization and tissue engineering in the orofacial skeleton. His current research focuses on defining how mandibular fibrochondrocytes interact with the extracellular matrix during TMJ health and disease, including how injury and mechanical overloading induces 1) cellular autophagy/apoptosis, 2) fibrogenic remodeling of the extracellular matrix, and 3) progenitor cell migration. He was awarded the Clinical and Translational Science Mentored Career Development Grant from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences for his work on TMJ dysfunction. His laboratory is supported by National Institutes of Health and the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation. He is a member of the editorial review board for Nature Scientific Reports.
